Pee Wee AE's Champs in Tiverton
On Saturday January 10th, the Listowel Pee Wee AE's were crowned champions of the 7th annual Wade Simmons Memorial tournament held in Tiverton.  Wade Simmons was one of two grade eight classmates that died in a tragic boating accident which occurred near Tobermory in the fall of 2000.  The four team round robin tournament hosted by his family and friends was unique in that points were awarded for periods won, goals scored and games won.   At the end of the round robin, the team with the most points was awarded the title.

Game one saw the Cyclones paired up against their rivals from Kincardine.  Once again these two teams fought tooth and nail with the Cyclones emerging as 4-3 winners.  Scoring for Listowel were Riley Thompson (unassisted), Graeden Geiger, Tyler Russell (unassisted) and Austin Service.  Owen Bender and Blake Laidlaw picked up the assists on the Geiger goal.  Mattew Daviau and Russell drew assists on Service's marker.

In game two the Cycs faced off against the Mildmay Monarchs.  This one proved to be a goaltenders dual.  Listowel's Steven Gottfried and Mildmay's Bill Finlayson turned aside shot after shot.  However, it would be Mildmay that would prevail.  Final score Mildmay 3  Listowel 2.  Service and Geiger picked up their second goals of the tourney.  Riley Conners, Eric Sousa and Tyler Bannerman earned the helpers.

Despite the loss, the Cyclones were down but not out.  If Kincardine could beat Mildmay, Listowel would still have a chance at the title by beating Tiverton.  Fortunately for Listowel, Kincardine did manage a narrow 4-2 victory.  The stage was now set for the Cyclones to face Tiverton in the tourneys final game.  After careful calculations it was concluded that Listowel
would not only have to win each period, but, they would also have to score at least six goals.

With the tournament in their own hands, the Cycs came out flying against an overmatched Tiverton squad.  Mid way through the first, Riley Thompson went top shelf on a beautiful breakaway goal.  Moments later Graeden Geiger (assisted by Bender and Drew McKee) would bulge the twine giving the Cyclones a 2 - 0 lead after one. In the second the Cycs would take a 4 - 0 lead when Riley Conners (from Owen Bender) and Bender (from Conners and Geiger) each found the back of the net.  Early in the third, Riley Thompson drilled a loose puck in the slot and potted his second of the game.  Assists went to McKee and Sousa.  With Gottfried continuing to stand tall in the pipes and the Cyclones now up by 5, the squad was desperate for a 6th and tournament winning goal.  After several close chances and with just over a minute left, Bender would find Geiger in the neutral zone and send him in alone.  Geiger would make no mistake as he drilled a hard wrist shot glove side.  Final score Listowel 6  Tiverton 0.  Well done Cycs.

The AE Cyclones now prepare for their WOAA semi final playoff series versus Kincardine.  Scheduled home dates are Wed. January 14th @ 8 pm and Sunday January 18th @ 5:30 pm.  Be sure to come out for what should be a very exciting series.
