Cyclones top Falcons in WOAA Group play

The bantams started off their playoff run with a couple of wins over Hanover

With the local lads getting a 1st round bye in the OMHA playoffs they took the opportunity to play a couple of games against Hanover which count towards the WOAA playoffs. Game 1 was in Listowel and started with a great pace, as a both teams were rested and ready too play. Owen Bender got the Cycs on the board late in the 1st period as he tucked home a rebound (Brenden Hall & Matt Koch assisting). Hanover responded seconds later tying the score at 1’s, but Bender would again put the local lads ahead in the dying minutes of the 1st period (Koch & Caleb Warren assisting). Listowel continuous pressure along with Hanover’s short bench seemed to take its toll as the Cycs grabbed control of the game in the 2nd. Broedy Karelse’s backhand found the net (Warren & Blake Buchanan assisting) in the 2nd period, then Riley Thompson would round out the scoring in the 3rd (Warren & Parker Yungblut assisting) giving the Cycs the 4-1 win. Braeden Ellis was strong in net earning the victory.

Game 2 was in Hanover at the nice new P&H Centre, and again started off with a good pace. This time Hanover would opening the scoring late in the 1st but Karelse’s hard work would get the Cycs on the board as he buried a nice move in tight. Then in the dying seconds of the 1st Thompson would put the Cycs ahead (Karelse & Blake Buchanan assisting). Like the 1st meeting Listowel’s speed combined with Hanover short bench & 3rd game in a 5 days became evident in the 2nd period as Listowel took control scoring 4 times. Warren would pick up 2 of these goals (both on sweet backhands), while Riley Conners and Bender each had 1 (drawing assists Koch-2, Bender, Thompson, Conners & Buchanan). Koch would round out the scoring late in the 3rd period giving Listowel the 7-2 victory. Steven Gottfried, despite not being tested a lot, looked sharp in net.

The Cycs have one more game in the WOAA playoffs this Sunday @ 7:00 vs BCH, followed but the International Silver Stick the following weekend.
