Black, Red and White Win 4 out of Last 5 Games
The Novice Rep Cycs are on a roll.

On November 13th, the Cycs headed to Blyth to take on the Blyth-Brussels Crusaders where they put together one of their best all around outings of the year. Everything they had been working on in practice the week prior was brought with them to the rink on this night. “Yeah, the boys were dumping the puck in, pursuing hard, back checking, and starting to make some good passes,” commented Coach Seiler. “It was pretty to watch!” Netminder, JZ, also put one of his best showings so far this season and the Crusaders were only able to sneak two past him.  Lead by the hustle of James Benny Bender, the Cycs picked up their game in the second and took it to the home team.  Much to the Crusader’s disappointment two early goals were not going to be enough to defeat the Cycs as Spalding and Coombs netted two to tie the game.  Tate Vader bagged the game winner midway through the third to help the team claim a come-from-behind win.  With the victory, the boys were now only one win away from a Coach Seiler pizza party!

On the weekend of November 15th, the boys and their families traveled to Huntsville for their second tournament of the year. The Cycs finished group play with 2 wins and 1 loss but were edged out on goal differential preventing them from moving onto the semis. Coach Meulensteen was impressed with his team’s ability to gain the line and follow their game plan. “When the boys are focused and working hard, we can skate with most teams,” commented Meulensteen.

Game 1:  The boys hit the Olympic size ice surface for their first game of the tournament against Nickel City. The team of fourteen came out flying and quickly gained the lead. Although the long drive and big ice surface may have taken its toll on the Cycs legs, they held onto their lead for the entire game and fought off a last minute come back by Nickel City.  Final score, 4 to 3 for the Cycs.  Schouten, Coombs, Vader, and Spalding each netted goals for the Cycs while Meulensteen, Sharpin, Hamilton and Weale chipped in with assists.

Game 2:  The second match-up of the tournament was 24 hours later versus Parry Sound. Again the Cycs followed their game plan and jumped out to a quick lead. They continued to press Parry Sound and kept the puck in the offensive end for most of the game - allowing only 3 shoots on goalie JZ. By the final buzzer, the Cycs demonstrated their balanced attack with seven goals from coming from six different scorers (Vader, Weale, Schouten, Meulensteen, Spalding, and Sharpin).  Leroux, Coombs, Reyes, Weale, Schouten, Meulensteen, and Spalding all added assists. Airtight D performances by Wilson and Williams helped to cement the win.  Final score, 7 to 1.

Game 3:  Two and half hours later, the team of 14 took to the ice again to this time do battle against Oro. Although the boys put forth a good effort and out shot their opposition 16-6, they couldn't get any bounces or breaks and struggled to get anything past the Oro netminder. Coach Meulensteen was pleased with the how many shots his team was able to muster, but still encouraged his team to “get hungrier and win the battles in the corners.”  Harrison Meulensteen managed the only goal thanks to a hardworking assists by Jesse Coombs and Tate Vader.  Final score, 3 to 1 for Oro.  The coaches were proud of how the boys represented Listowel and played hard all weekend.

One week later and following one of the boys most spirited practices of the year thus far, the Cycs returned to ice for a regular season match-up against the Novice Ironmen from Wingham. Within no time, the team of 14 had potted their first “G” of the game and they weren't ready to stop at one. By the end of the third period the Cycs had seven tallies and their fourth win in their last five outings. Wingham did manage to muster a few offensive opportunities but Cycs tender, Jack Zilliax, had a solid performance between the pipes and sent the Ironmen back up highway 86 without a goal. Congratulations on a well earned shout out, JZ!  Again demonstrating their scoring depth, 6 different Cycs (Schouten, Reyes, Coombs, Meulensteen, Weale, and Vader) scored goals while Coombs, Schouten, Leroux, Reyes, Williams, and Vader notched assists.

The boys will be looking for a repeat performance against the Ironmen next Saturday, when they travel to Wingham for a 12:30pm match-up at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex.
