Wingham Silver Stick 2013
This week has the Atom Reps competing in the Wingham Silver Stick Tournament.  This is Wingham’s 29th year hosting the Atom Division.

Listowel played Hanover in their opening game on Sunday.  Coombsy started the team off with a goal 6 minutes in that was assisted by Jordan and Smitty.  With only 1:14 left in the period Benny had a terrific chance that the Hanover goalie stoned him on, but with a second chance he was able to bang it in.  In the 2nd period, Benny showed the guys he had another one in him, and not to be out done, Chet added 2, and Carter Servais flew down the ice with yet another breakaway that gave Listowel a 6-0 lead heading to the 3rd.  Coombsy added another insurance goal, but Hanover continued to pressure and ended up spoiling Josh’s shutout with their lone goal of the game, which ended in a 7-1 Listowel win.

Wednesday night was Goderich’s turn to play Listowel.  Previous games with these teams usually found the penalty box doors to be on a turnstile.  Smitty opened the scoring with a great second chance effort.  By the end of the 1st period, Carter Servais plunked 2 in, and Coombsy and Benny each contributed to give Listowel a bit of breathing room with a 4-0 lead.  The second period had both goalies playing stellar resulting in a scoreless period.  Chet added a goal to his point total of the game in the 3rd and similar to the Hanover game; Goderich kept pushing and again spoiled the shutout with a late goal ending the game in a 5-1 win for Listowel.

Saturday morning found Listowel versus Paris.  A win guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals, and that was exactly what the boys were focused on.  Everyone looked ready to play, but for some reason Maddox showed up with an Ovechkin stick that looked about 5” too short.  To put the crowd at ease with the new stick length, Mad Dog buried one top corner in the first few minutes.  The puck travelled exactly where Maddox had aimed, which gave him a new sense of confidence.  Thank goodness Patrick doesn’t have to crazy glue the end back on.  Coombsy and Carter Servais added a pair each, and Chet helped out as well which gave Listowel a 6-0 lead going into the 2nd period.  Smitty had the lone goal in the 2nd, and Paris out-scored Listowel 2-1 for the remainder of the game.  That stat doesn’t have a spot on the score sheet, but the final score of 7-2 sure does.

The semi-finals had Listowel matched up against Twin Centres.  The only meeting these teams have had was the first 2 games of the season, and Twin Centres got the best of the Cyclones on both games.  Twin Centres put the first mark on the score sheet.  At the end of the 1st, it was still a 1-goal game.  Taytt took the puck coast-to-coast to put Listowel on the board.  It was then Carter Servais on a breakaway that gave Listowel a 3-1 lead.  Early in the 3rd, Owen was fed the puck by Carter Servais and Benny, and he made no mistake to put Listowel up by 3.  Twin Centres kept bringing more to the table and cut the growing Listowel lead by 1.  Out killing a penalty, Chet worked hard to create his own chance and brought the crowd to their feet by scoring a short-handed goal to give Listowel a 5-2 lead.  Not going away quietly, Twin Centres blasted another past Josh, but it was Carter Coombs who added yet one more to Listowel’s lead.  A 6-3 victory earns Listowel a birth into the final game on Sunday against the Mitchell Meteors.

A hockey centre that always brings a tough game to town is certainly Mitchell.  You cannot afford to make many mistakes, and if you do, the scoreboard will certainly show it at the end of the game.  Either team is not looking for a shutout, or a 9-1 game.  A 1-goal lead is all that is required to guarantee a spot in the International Silver Stick Tournament.  Win or lose, both teams will leave the arena with an accomplishment only 2 of the teams competing can claim; Silver Stick Finalists or Silver Stick Champions.

Leave it to the 50-goal scorer of the season so far to draw first blood, and Carter Servais does just that to give Listowel a 1-0 lead.  With just a few minutes left in the 1st, Camden did his best Coombsy impersonation and does the wrap-around to end the periods with a 2-0 lead.  The 2nd period had Listowel in a bit of penalty trouble, and with a 2-man disadvantage Listowel almost killed it off but Mitchell capitalized bringing them within 1 and entering the 3rd period with a momentum swing.  Mitchell continued to attempt to shut down Listowel, but not only is the 1st line a force to be reckoned with, but so are the 2nd and 3rd shifts.  There is just no letting up with the Cyclone forwards. Taytt finds the mesh with a great feed from Camden.  Owen then gets a pass from Chet and Jordy and Owen makes sure he increases Listowel’s lead to 4-1.  Carter Coates and Colin continued to only allow shots on Josh from the outside, and Josh wasn’t about to let a soft one penetrate the goal line from that distance.  Wrapping the game up, Carter Coombs wraps one in from behind and that puts Listowel on top with a 5-1 win against a tough Mitchell team.

Congrats boys and good luck in the International Silver Stick Tournament in January.
