Atom Reps Attempt To Bring Lift-Lock Trophy Back To Listowel
Friday afternoon, Listowel’s first game opponent was the Ajax Knights.

You know the feeling when your child frantically comes from a dressing room in near hysterics when they leave either a skate or a pair of gloves at home?  A little confusion in the Coombs’ household Friday morning, found Carter unpacking his brother Jesse’s equipment in the dressing room.  With a little creative thinking, and a very kind Schomberg player, Carter was dressed with some borrowed equipment and ready to go.

The first period had the Cyclones up 5-0 with Carter Servais scoring 2, and Benny, Jordan and Camden helping the cause.  Coombsy, Smitty and Taytt added a few more, and Carter completed the hat-trick to put Listowel on a 9-0 victory.

Game 2 had Whitby looking to give Listowel a run.  With 6 minutes left in the 1st, Coombsy (with his own equipment) dug feverishly in front, and shoved the first goal past the Whitby goaltender.  3 minutes later, Smitty roofed one from the slot, but just a minute later Whitby reminded the fans they had come to play and shaved the Listowel lead in half.  The 2nd period saw Whitby tie it up early, and then Carter Servais was handed a beautiful feed from Chet, and he made no mistake to put Listowel up by 1.  Again with only a minute left, Whitby tied the score at 3 all.  The Cyclones centre men each added one which gave Listowel  5-3 lead and everything looked good until with 7 seconds left, a Whitby player came screaming across ice and leveled Chet into the boards as he attempted to dump the puck into Whitby’s end to finish the game.  Trainer Jim leapt into action and had Chet gain his composure lying on the ice, and within a few minutes he was thankfully skating back to the bench.

Thanks to Coach Jason’s connections in the hockey world, the team was fortunate enough to have a private tour through the Peterborough Pete’s locker room, as well as the Alumni Room.  It was very kind of the Pete’s to allow us a rare behind the scenes look of an OHL player.

Game 3 matched Listowel against the Glanbrook Rangers.   The action was at both ends of the ice, and it seemed Josh was again in a shut-out mode.  Finally, Jordan made a rush from Listowel’s end and was stopped by the Glanbrook goalie, but Carter Servais was right on the door step to burry the rebound and the first of the match.  Carter Servais put 2 more on the scoreboard to give Listowel a 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd period.  Glanbrook made a goalie change to start the period.  As Listowel was on the penalty kill, things got busy in front of Josh, and somehow, the puck hit the post and found itself nestled between Josh’s sprawling pads.  Benny and Carter rounded out the scoring to see Listowel with a 5-0 win and a birth to the semi-finals on Sunday.

In the hospitality room Saturday night, the talk was everyone’s GPS could not find the arena Listowel was to play in on Sunday morning.  Luckily, it was just a spelling error, and thanks to Coach Hubba, the correct spelling of D O U R O was gone over numerous times.

The semi-final game had Listowel and Lindsay squaring off.  After 2 successful penalty kills, Maddox pounded a rebound just over the goaltenders glove.  Lindsay tied up the game with the only goal in the 2nd period.  The 3rd period started to tick down in time, and with 6 minutes left, Benny with his usual large presence in front of the net, put Listowel in front 2-1.  Josh held off the frantic Lindsay forwards, which had Listowel heading to the Championship game against the Ottawa Silver Seven Whites.

Coach Nic has won the tournament twice as a player, and now finds himself in his 3rd finals game, but now as an Assistant Coach.

Coach Jason was in familiar territory as well.  The defending champs, the Otttawa Silver Seven White team has an ex-NHLer by the name of Shean Donovan as their Head Coach.  Shean played for Pittsburg, Calgary, Atlanta, and Ottawa, but more importantly, Shean was lucky enough to have shared the ice with Listowel’s Coach Jason, when they both played for the Ottawa 67s in 1993-94.  Coach Jason has his boys prepared for the challenge.

After on-ice introductions, the first period flew by and ended with no score.  Not that long into the 2nd, Ottawa were able to sneak in 2 goals past Josh, which had Listowel in unfamiliar territory being down by 2 goals.  After the second goal, Colin, Jordan, Taytt and Carter seemed to elevate their game and pushed the Ottawa forwards even more to the outside which, seemed to hold Ottawa off: at least for a bit.  Coombsy was able to pull off his magic and put Listowel on the board.  Not to be out done, Carter Servais added the equalizer assisted by Taytt and Maddox.

Early in the 3rd, Owen in timely fashion put himself on the score sheet with assists by Coombsy and Benny.  With around 6 minutes left, Jordan let a hard wrist shot go from the point that got kicked out but Coombsy found it and gave Listowel  2-goal lead.  As to be expected, Ottawa kept pushing and came within 1.  With 1:29 left, Shean Donovan’s son Jorian came wheeling around on the left wing and flew a puck just over the shouder of Josh, which made a ringing noise off the crossbar that could be heard at Boston Pizza.  The puck stayed out and Listowel was victorious over the defending Champions with a 4-3 win.

HUGE Congratulations to the Atom Rep Team as the 2014 Peterborough Lift Lock Champions, and thanks to everyone for making it a weekend to never forget.
