Peewee AE Finishes Regular Season Strong
Though they would only manage one win in their last three regular season games, the Peewee AE Cyclones cranked up the intensity and head into Elmvale Tournament and Playoffs looking srong.

December 20th the boys were on the road for a rescheduled game against Saugeen Shores Storm.  The crowd was expecting an exciting match up and they were not disappointed.  With three skaters away on Christmas holidays, the rest of the squad had their work cut out for them against a powerful Saugeen team.

The Storm opened the scoring in the first 15 seconds of the game, giving the Listowel fans cause for concern.  But Jacob soon calmed the crowd's fears by bringing one in alone on the power play to tie up the game. While on another power play, Seth added some breathing room by potting one with 2:21 left in the first (assisted by Smitty), ending the period 2-1 in favour of the Cycs.

A fierce Saugeen team came back within the first couple minutes of the 2nd period to tie up the score.  But Kris fired a pass to Jacob and he made no mistake to pull ahead of the Storm at 9:09.  The Storm played an aggressive game, marking 18 minutes in the penalty box, and handing the boys many opportunities to use the man-advantage.  Nick was there to capitalize on another Cyclones power play, with assists from Jacob and Liam, to give the Cycs a 2 point lead.  With 11 seconds remaining in the 2nd, the Storm battled to put one past Lucas and closed up the gap, ending the period 4-3 for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones continued to battle hard, with Jacob completing the hat trick, thanks to yet another Storm penalty, and pulling the Cycs into a brief 5-3 lead, before the Storm answered with one of their own a few seconds later.  With the Cycs rattled, the Storm would score two more before the period was out, pulling ahead 7-5.  The Cyclones would not relent, and with another power play handed to us, Justin drove one last puck in (assisted by Kris and Jacob) at 1:28.  Unfortunately, before the Cycs could ride the momentum to a win, the curfew would cut them down and the Storm won 7-6.

December 22, the Cyclones played host to the Lucknow Sepoys.  As with the last time these two teams met, the Cyclones kept the play in the Sepoys end for much of the first period, though they would only manage one goal (Jacob, assisted by Justin).  The second period is when the Cycs really came to life.  Four minutes in a scramble in front of the Sepoys net resulted in Kris firing one up in the top corner (assisted by Jacob and Bo).  Seconds later, Maddox fired a laser pass to Freshie who carried it up the middle and scored.

But while on a power play, Matt scored the goal that brought the crowd to their feet (and cleared the Cyclones bench); from the face off dot, the puck slid past three Sepoys skaters and went five-hole!  Not to be outdone, Bo, short-handed, hearkened back to his days as a forward and decided to go for a skate.  He hammered one in, bringing the Cyclones tally to 5.

The third period saw both teams taking lots of turns in the penalty box, and the Sepoys potting two goals near game's end, but the Cycs took it 5-2.

Tonight's game against Milverton was another hard fought battle.  The previous two meetings had the Drive winning 3-0 and 6-2.  This match up, however, the boys dug a little deeper and gave the Drive a run for their money. While the Drive was first on the scoreboard, the Cyclones did not make it easy.  Great defensive play by Connor, Johnny and Brayden, not to mention some awesome saves by Lucas, kept a lid on the scoring chances by Milverton.  A beautiful set up by Owen led to a great goal by Seth to tie up the first period 1-1.

Many great scoring opportunities and continued strong defense nearly prevented Milverton from adding another goal, but with 2:55 in the 2nd, Milverton would manage to put one in and the score was 2-1.

Despite many shots taken and some awesome backchecking, notably by Freshie and Justin, the Cycs could not get past strong Milverton goaltending.  With Lucas hustling to the bench to add another skater, and a couple near misses by Maddox and Nick, the buzzer went and the game was over.  Final Milverton 2-Cyclones 1.

The Peewee AE have had a respectable season, playing hard and improving as the season wore on.  The boys should be very proud of the way they've played, demonstrating team work and sportsmanship.  The Peewee AE will gear up for the playoffs by competing in the Elmvale AE tournament this weekend.  Many thanks to Head Coach Steve Dunbar, and his staff (Trevor, Tyler, Addison and Brady) for all of their dedication this season.
