Red Edged in First Game of Playoffs
Listowel Novice LL Red lost a close contest, 4-3, to the open their series with the Hanover Falcons 1 on Tuesday night.

Red opened the scoring in the first period as Noah Hiemstra picked up a rebound from Finn Molenhuis behind the net and tucked the puck into the short side of the goal.

The home team then extended its lead to 2-0 on a Knox Harrison wrister from the slot after he took a cross-ice feed from defenseman Oliver Hershey.  Harrison was slotted into the lineup prior to the game as Warner Hurst was unable to go (flu-like symptoms).

But that’s when the Falcons roared back with a trio of tallies from Tava Lester to take a one-goal advantage.  Red tied the contest late in the second frame on a shot from the point by Kole Schiestel, which was set up by Hiemstra and Molenhuis give-and-go.

The Falcons took the lead once more on Lester’s fourth goal of the evening, a lead they could have extended several times in the third had it not been for some highlight-reel saves made by Noah Szasz.  The netminder’s brilliance landed him the Player of the Game medallion at the end of the night.

Listowel’s defensive unit of Brynn Berfelz, Grayson Matheson, Schiestel  and Hershey skated stride-for-stride all night with Hanover’s top offensive talents to keep the game close.  Joining their efforts were Ruby Hillier, Nehemiah Dyck and Spencer Henhoeffer, who generated multiple scoring chances but were unable to beat the Falcons’ goalie.

Red will look for redemption while completing the home-and-home series in Hanover on Saturday with puck drop set for 9am.
