Parry Sound Tournament
The Peewee LL Red team traveled to Parry Sound on the weekend to participate in the Bob Beaumont annual tournament.  A recent injury and some family functions left the squad shorthanded as they battled hard with only 9 skaters + a goalie.  Despite being shorthanded, the squad went 3-1-1, losing the final in dramatic OT fashion.

Game #1, Friday afternoon, got the tournament off to a quick start as they defeated division rival Huron-Bruce by a score of 5-1.  The captain, Kayden Helmka, led the charge in this one (and all weekend) as he potted 4 goals in the victory.  This game was followed by an early morning 8am game vs Huntsville.  The sleeply legs caught up to them, as a quick 2-0 lead was erased and resulted in a 3-3 final.  Rylie Williams earned the hard hat in this one & scored the eventual tying goal in the 3rd period for her first of the season.  The final game Saturday saw a battle for first in the division against previously undefeated Barrie.  This game was intense right until the end, and was scoreless into the 3rd period.  Barrie scored mid-way through the period, but a timely goal from Hunter Donahue tied things up late in the 3rd.  Captain Helmka added the game winner (and later an empty netter) to seal the deal in the last couple minutes of the 3rd.  Nic Tomlinson was also a force in this one, as his speed and checking resulted in a couple breakaways that he was unable to convert.  Jaxon McLaughlin was outstanding in this one as Barrie threw a lot of rubber his way, but he stood tall right to the final horn.

On to championship Sunday where the semi final was up against the Lefory Icebreakers.  Midway though the game Listowel found their legs and turned a tight 2-2 game into a wild 7-2 final score.  Sam Dennis led the charge in this one potting 2 goals and was helped out by a beauty end to end goal from Ben Robinson.  Maddex Sebastian also got in on the scoring, adding his first of the tournament, while also helping the team out by logging minutes at both forward and defence.   The win put Listowel in the final with a re-match against a tough Barrie team.  Similar to the first matchup, the game was scoreless late into the 3rd.  Barrie broke the deadlock with about 5 min to play, but another clutch goal by Donahue tied things up at 1 late in the 3rd.  Overtime saw teams play 3 on 3, and Listowel was inches away from potting the winner, but instead the puck went back the other way for a breakaway and a tough 2-1 loss.

Special props to the defence group of Cruz Fischer, Ted Zilliax and Ben Robinson, as the team played with only 3 defencemen for the tournament, resulting in these 3 logging a ton of ice time.  Despite that, the D-core stood tall all weekend on tired legs & played a huge role in the teams success.   McLaughlin also played every minute in the crease and had a tremendous weekend with numerous big saves.  The coaching staff is very proud of the battle from all 10 players and the hard work and character they showed.  The medal at the end was not the colour they strived for, but none-the-less they should be proud of their accomplishment.
