Cyclones battle Capitals in defensive U9 battle
The U9 Cyclones travelled to Walkerton to play the Capitals on Monday night fell by a goal in a very tightly contested game between two good teams.

Sully Meulensteen made his debut between the pipes and didn't disappoint looking very comfortable and composed all night long. The boys from Listowel came out strong from the puck drop with the first shift of Miles Good, Tyce Passmore and Oliver Gutnkecht doing everything but score,  On the next shift the forecheck continued as Maddox Birk dug a puck free in the corner and found Ian Magee for a backhander top shelf to open the scoring.  The teams traded chances for the next few shifts but both goalies stood tall.  Mid way through the period Magee found Alton Sholdice who would slide the puck into the open net and give the Cycs a 2-0 lead. Near the end of period the Caps would finally beat Meulensteen with a perfect wrister top shelf.  The first period saw little free ice given up by either team and the score would stay at 2-1 heading to the break.

The second period was the same as the first with both teams fighting for every inch of ice.  The Caps would find the net twice in the 2nd frame to take a 3-2 lead.  The Cyclones continued to push hard but couldn't get the equalizer eventually falling by a single goal.

The coaches were very proud of how the team played as we have been working on getting in on the forecheck and protecting our own end, both of which everyone did in this game.  Sully was great in net all night and we hope to see him in that spot much more this season.  With the focus on forechecking, Brandt Donaldson and Fin Long were tasking with holding the defensive zone and did so admirably all night against a very talented Walkerton team.

We're back in action on Friday as we head to the Drayton U9 Jamboree.
