Cyclones Win Regional Silver Stick Tournament
The U11 REP Tier 1 team made its way down HWY86 for their Regional Silver Stick tournament hosted by Wingham with hopes of moving on to the International Silver Stick Tournament in Forest this past weekend.
Over the first week of the tournament the team cruised through
their pool play with wins against Saugeen Shores and Saugeen Valley while
narrowly escaping with a win over a hard skating Kitchener Rangers team.
Scores of 8-2, 8-2 and 4-3 had them finish 1st in their pool.
This set up a semifinal match up against Kincardine on a snowy Sunday
morning. The coaching staff challenged the players to bring their
best and wow did they ever as they easily had their best performance of the
year carrying the play for all 35 min. Through 2 periods though the
puck was not behaving which gave kincardine a 1-0 lead through 2.
To their credit the cyclones players just turned it up more and dominated
the 3rd period which led to a 4-1 win and a birth in the final against a very
strong Mid-Huron team who has had Listowel's number so far this year.
Listowel came out flying in the finals going up 3-0 and as Mid-Huron started
their push back Listowel was up to the task with great team defense and
goaltending. A back-and-forth 3rd period saw Listowel hold on for a
4-3 win! The championship was the result of a whole team effort led
by their commitment to team defense and strong team first play along with top notch
goaltending which was key in only giving up 4 goals total on Sunday.
The team will now travel to Forest on Jan 24-26 to compete
for the Intenational Silver Stick.
