The Midget AE’s gained some sort of revenge by beating the team that eliminated them from the Collingwood Silver Stick by the score of 6-0
The hometown boys came out flying as they had something to prove to themselves and their hard work was rewarded just a minute and a half into the game when Justin Bauman tucked home a rebound (assists Steve Cleary & Devon Elg). The Cycs continued their aggressive fore-checking and just 2 minutes later Matt Wilkans bulged the twine (assist Anthony Quipp). The 2 goal lead seemed to wake up the Storm as both teams exchanged numerous chances over the rest of the 1st period and most of the 2nd but again it would be Bauman who potted his 2nd on yet another rebound (assists Elg & Jordan Rumph). The Cycs would pad the lead to 4-0 just 30 seconds later as Cory George buried a shot off an offensive face-off. Heading into the 3rd with the lead the hometown boys continued the pressure while at the same time trying to be defensively responsible. Late in the 3rd Cleary would score an Ovechkin like goal, as he slide a backhand past the Storm goalie while falling down (assists Rumph & Jason Hollinger). Drew Hicks would round out the scoring on a rebound from the slot (assists George & Ben Verkley).
The score did not represent the balance of play in this game. Saugeen had plenty of scoring chances and if not for the solid goaltending of Ryan Hak the score would have been much closer.
The AE Cycs continue to show improvement and will be tested this weekend as they head to St Clements for another Silver Stick qualifier. Their opening games are against Glanbrook & Strathroy.
