Cyclones Strong All Weekend Long
The Listowel U13-AE Cyclones played their best hockey of the season at this weekend's tournament in Mitchell.

The Cyclones kicked things off with a Friday contest against Ilderton. The Cycs grabbed all the momentum quickly with a trio of first period goals and finished things off with an empty-netter for a 4-1 win.

Listowel then played an early morning Saturday game against the host Mitchell club. The evenly matched teams exchanged rushes all morning but the visitors just couldn't seem to get any puck luck and were blanked, 4-0.

Needing a win to move on to the playoff round that evening, the Cyclones took on the Strathroy Rockets in what became an instant classic. The red and white took a 1-0 lead with a successful powerplay in the first frame. The Cyclones jumped doubled their total later in the period, only to relinquish a goal in the final minute to make it 2-1 after one. The teams traded chances all through the second with nothing to show for it on the scoreboard, and then the Rockets knotted things again, 2-2, with seven minutes remaining in the third. With some impressive penalty killing, including a lengthy 5-on-3, Listowel remained in the game and had a flurry of chances to grab the win but couldn't get a third puck over the goal line. The 2-2 final score was enough for the Cyclones to go 1-1-1 for the weekend, but fell just short of the semis due to the second tie-breaker (goal differential) as Strathroy moved on thanks to a lopsided win over Ilderton earlier in the day.

Listowel's solid play over two days started from the net out. Austin Frey shined all weekend and came within 44 seconds of picking up the shutout in the Friday contest.

Spencer Henhoeffer dropped back on defense for the tournament and showed that he had the passing skills and body positioning to make light of the task.

Jacob Hodder carried the puck well while playing with patience to stay out of trouble all weekend in his return to the lineup.

Malcolm Long used his poise and shiftiness to rush the puck well and set up the opening goal of the final game.

Finn Molenhuis carried the play many times and produced offensive chances, including a slick feed which led to the second goal against the Rockets.

The forward group forechecked tightly with speed over the weekend and produced more offensive chances than they had over the previous few weeks combined.

Owen Alexander used his versatility to play all positions across the lines and was essential to keeping Listowel in the game Saturday night with his prowess on the penalty kills.

Nehemiah Dyck got the offense going right off the hop on Friday as he wristed home a goal to open the scoring.

Noah Hiemstra logged as many miles as anyone in the tournament and set up the team's third goal on Friday with a crisp pass from the corner.

Hudson Ireland played with speed all weekend and grabbed a goal and an assist on Friday before deking in the second goal on Saturday.

Ryan Jurgens moved up to the forward group for the weekend and was strong on the penalty kills while icing the game on Friday with an empty-net snipe from his own end.

Liam Ough collected a goal and an assist against Ilderton and started the scoring against Strathroy as he jammed home a rebound on the powerplay.

Avery Spencer kept his play consistent all weekend and was key in neutral zone play as he was able to deke through traffic and spring his linemates with tape-to-tape passing.

The Cyclones will look to build off the momentum of the weekend as they take on Saugeen Shores at 7:35 pm at the SKMC on Wednesday.
